Finding a therapist who truly gets it is harder than it should be

For many LGBTQ+ people, the biggest barrier to getting support isn't the decision to seek therapy, it's finding a therapist who won't treat your identity as the problem to be solved. Too many people have sat across from a well-meaning clinician who stumbled over pronouns, made assumptions about relationships, or responded to your experience with visible confusion. That takes energy you shouldn't have to spend.

For youth and young adults especially, the stakes feel even higher. Coming out, navigating identity, managing family dynamics, or finding your footing in a world that doesn't always make room for you—these aren't small things. They deserve a therapist who already understands the terrain, not one who's learning it from you.

And for parents trying to support a child or family member who is questioning or coming out, the questions can be just as real: How do I support them well? How do I get this right?

Centrepeace exists for all of these people.

What is gender-affirming and LGBTQ+-inclusive therapy?

Gender-affirming and LGBTQ+-inclusive therapy is counselling that treats your identity, orientation, and lived experience as context, not as a diagnosis. Rather than pathologizing who you are, an affirming therapist works with you on the actual challenges: anxiety, depression, trauma, family relationships, identity development, and anything else that's brought you to seek support.

"Affirming" means your therapist is knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ experiences, uses correct language and pronouns without prompting, and creates a space where you can show up as your whole self. At Centrepeace, this isn't an approach we've adopted—it's foundational to how this practice was built.

There's no fixed timeline. Some clients come for a few months around a specific transition; others work with Pam over a longer period. The work goes at your pace.

What changes when you work with an affirming therapist

A space where your identity is the context, not the issue. Sessions are built around your actual goals, with a therapist who already understands your experience.

Support across the full picture. Anxiety, depression, family dynamics, self-esteem, trauma—all of these can intersect with identity. Pam works with the whole person.

Community connection. Through ties to PFLAG London and QX, Pam can point you toward local resources and community, not just clinical support.
